TARSAR MARSAR TREK

from 0.00

It is said that there are over 400 high-altitude alpine lakes in Kashmir. The pristine Tarsar Marsar lakes are two better-known and probably the most scenic among them. They lie in the far northwest of Kashmir in the Aru valley, dominated by Mt. Kolahoi (5600m), the highest peak in the Kashmir valley. Traverse the pine-covered mountains of the Kashmir Himalaya and, as you ascend above the treeline, experience these stunning alpine lakes surrounded by scenic, elevated valleys, and meadows. All along the way, wildflowers, gigantic alpine trees, roaring waters of the Lidder, and myriad wildlife captivate the trekker at every step of the journey.

  1. Day 1 Drive from Srinagar to Aru (115 kms/ 4 hours)

After breakfast, drive to Aru. If we arrive early, we can explore the beautiful valley.

Overnight stay and dinner at Aru Hotel.

  2. Day 2 Aru (2500m) to Lidderwat (2790m) 11 kms/ 5 to 6 hours

Grade: Easy with a well-defined trail Today’s trail is a gentle ascent following the Lidder river, mostly on flat meadows and occasionally passing through clusters of conifers. The beautiful campsite of Lidderwat is at the confluence of the Lidder River, flowing down from the Kolahoi glacier, and the Tarsar stream.

  3. Day 3 Lidderwat (2790m) to Sekhwas (3350m) (7 kms / 4 to 5 hours)

Grade: Moderate with a well-defined trail Following the Tarsar stream, we will ascend gently on an uphill trail passing by multiple clearings and clusters of conifers. From here, we will descend to the riverbed and cross the river by hopping over a few boulders and then crossing a makeshift bridge. The pathway here is pleasant; After this, the ascent becomes a little steeper, and as we gain altitude, we will enter a forest of silver birch, also known as Bhoj trees. We will reach a Y-point formed by the dividing ridge, concealing the Tarsar lake. Shekwas is an undulating meadowland, reached by meandering paths crossing two green valleys and surrounded by dark snow-patched mountains. We set up camp here for the night. One of the best camping locations on the trail.

  4. Day 4 Sekhwas (3200m) to Tarsar (3800m) –(5 kms / 3 to 4 hours)

Grade: Moderate with a well-defined trail Today’s trail is again a gentle climb followed by a flat walk. After crossing some spectacular views from different ridges in line with the trail, we arrive at a conical hilltop to get a glimpse of Tarsar, the beautiful almond-shaped lake. To reach the grassland of Tarsar, we cross the stream with the help of fastened rocks and boulders and finally reach our campsite. Later in the evening, we explore the lake. Overnight at the most beautiful campsite of the trek.

  5. Day 5 Tarsar (3800m) to Sundersar (3950m) & Marsar Lake(3850m) via Sonmas pass (4100m) (5 kms / 4 to 5 hours) s pass (4100m) (5 kms / 4 to 5 hours)

Grade: Moderate to difficult The trail begins with a steep ascent to the top of Sonmas Pass on the ridge dividing the Tarsar and the Sundersar lake. After that, it is an easy walk with occasional ascents which will bring you to the beautiful lake of Sundersar, meaning ’beautiful lake’. Packed lunch en route. From there, one can do a half circular walk to the lake and climb a steep section to the ridge from where one can see Marsar lake. By late afternoon, reach the campsite.

  6. Day 6 Sundarsar (3900m) to Sonmasti (9 kms / 5 to 6 hours)

Grade: Moderate Today’s walk is mostly downhill in the valley. After that, we return to our campsite and head towards our destination for the day – the meadow of Sonmasti. The trail from here is mainly a gradual descent. Arrive at the campsite for a hot lunch.

  7. Day 7 Sonmasti (3260m) to Surfraw (2000m) 11 kms / 4 to 5 hours Drive Surfaw to Srinagar –(50 kms / 2 hours)

We start early after breakfast. A few river crossings make this day interesting. As we descend back to civilisation today, we will observe a change in the scenery, with meadows giving way to dense forest. We will arrive at the trailhead by noon. After lunch, we drive back to Srinagar. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

  8. Day 8 Fly out of Srinagar

Transfer to the airport from the hotel.
