Explore Spiti With Chandratal

from 0.00

Mid June – September

Every year for six months, the Himalayan valleys of Kinnaur and Spiti emerge from a thick cloak of snow to reveal a different secret world to man. Rivers start to flow with unseen fury, the earth turns into a swathe of colour, mountains unlock secret doorways and local inhabitants come out in celebration of nature itself. At dizzying heights of 2600m to 4200m, the experience is almost surreal. Gods and nature seem to lure man, and perhaps even challenge him to make the journey into their den of barren deserts, fierce mountains, turbulent rivers, dense forests and moody skies. This is your journey of discovery in the lesser known Himalayas.

  1. Day 1 Arrival in Chandigarh; Drive to Shimla (2200m/7218 ft.; 113 km; 4 - 5 hrs)

The meeting place for the group is Chandigarh. We get picked up either at the Airport or the Railway station and start for Shimla. As we leave behind the plains the air gets cooler and we negotiate the winding mountain roads. Overnight stay at hotel in Shimla.

  2. Day 2 Shimla - Sangla (2640m/8662 ft.; 225 km; 7 - 8 hrs)

Today, post breakfast we drive to Sangla. If a landscape had the powers of casting spells, then the Sangla valley would be an extraordinary magician. Once seen, it is a place that can never be forgotten. Even the rushing waters of the Baspa river, that flow through its 95 km length, seem to absorb some of the magic and slow down to savour its snow-frame beauty. By evening, we reach Sangla and check in to the tented campsite. Dinner & overnight stay in a Deluxe Tented campsite in Sangla.

  3. Day 3 Sangla - Excursion to Chitkul & back (3450m/11,320 ft.; 23 km; 1 hr)

We drive to Chitkul, the highest and the last village on the Indo – Tibetan trade route. We walk for 6 km to Nagasthi, the last Indian Outpost. Here we enjoy a picnic lunch and trek back to Chitkul. From Chitkul we drive back to our camp. In the evening we walk around and enjoy the beauty of the place. Dinner and overnight stay at Deluxe-tented campsite in Sangla.

  4. Day 4 Sangla – Kalpa (2800m/9187 ft.; 50 km; 2 hrs)

The morning is free to do as we please. Post lunch we set off for Kalpa. This picturesque little hamlet offers a breathtaking view of the Kinner- Kailash range. Kalpa is also home to the Chilgoza (Pine) tree. In the evening we walk to Old Kalpa and visit Kalpa Monastery, alternately we can drive to Rogi Village. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel in Kalpa.

  5. Day 5 Kalpa - Tabo (3280m/10,762 ft.; 170 km; 6 - 7 hrs)

After an early morning breakfast we drive to Tabo. This is the day when we encounter the change in landscapes. From lush green valley we enter the barren hills. We have lunch on the way and visit Nako Lake. Time permitting we visit Giu Mummy. Giu is the only real mummy of a lama discovered till date, which is so well preserved. Located 3050m above sea level nature has endowed Spiti with a dust free environment where everything is preserved for posterity. We arrive in Tabo by evening. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel/guesthouse in Tabo.

  6. Day 6 Tabo - Kaza (3650m/11,976 ft.; 68 km; 2 hrs)

An exciting day – we have an excursion to Kibber village. Kibber (4270m/14,010 ft.) is one of the highest inhabited villages in the world. Perched on a vast stretch of land and surrounded by mountains of limestone rocks, the view from here is truly breath-taking. Post lunch we visit the Kye Monastery, 18 km from Kaza, which is located above Kaza at a height of (4166m/13,669 ft). Fine murals and a valuable collection of Kangyur (ancient Buddhist texts) are its attractions. We drive back to Kaza to explore this small one street town, the administrative head quarter of Spiti Region. Dinner and overnight stay at hotel/guesthouse in Kaza.

After an early morning breakfast, we start today’s journey. We pass Losar and climb the Kunzum La pass, the view from the top of the pass is beautiful. After a visit to the Kunzum Devi temple we descend to Chandratal. After spending some time at Chandratal we start for Batal and procced further to Rohtang Pass and finally to our destination Solang.
