Witness the rare Himalayan Brown Bears in the second coldest inhabited place in the world – Drass, Western Ladakh. Our remote lodge is arguably the best location in India for sighting this
magnificent mammal of the Himalayas – “Drenmo” (local name) along with Tibetan Wolf, Red Fox,
Long Tail Marmot, Asiatic Ibex, and various other mammals. The region is also a haven for birding
as it is home to a variety of warblers, finches and raptors.
Drenmo Lodge is part of Project Drenmo, a community based conservation project which works
towards mitigating human-Himlayan brown bear conflict in the Drass region.

  1. Day 01 Arrival in Srinagar. Drive to Sonamarg (2730m/8956 ft; 86km, 3-4hrs)

    We get a pick–up at the airport and drive to our hotel in Sonamarg. The rest of the day
    is spent in acclimatization walks. Overnight stay at hotel in Sonamarg.

  2. Day 02 Drive to Dras (3300m/ 10,826ft; 83km, 3-4 hrs)

    After breakfast we drive to Dras via Zozi-la (3528m/11574ft). Have lunch in lodge,
    Dras. Evening briefing session by professional spotter. Dinner at the lodge

  3. Day 03 Out for sighting

    Start the day with an early walk along the Mushkow river. Here we try spotting the
    bears in the mountains/valleys around. On a good day you will be able to spot over 30
    varieties of resident and migratory birds. Breakfast can be a picnic depending on the
    weather conditions and sightings. During the day, we will visit the nearby Shina villages
    towards Goshen or Pandrass. This valley also boasts of other wildlife such as marmots,
    Ibex, Fox and Wolves. Dinner at the lodge.

  4. Day 04 & 05 Out for sighting

    Early start to the day at 5am. Depending on the snow conditions, we will hike up or use
    ponies to reach the adjacent hillside, which provides a good vantage point to scan for
    bear movements in the area. Our spotters will accompany us and with their trained
    eyes and tracking skills, help us get to find and see this magnificent animal. Again
    depending on sighting situations the naturalist/spotters will decide for lunch as a picnic
    or back at Lodge.
    Morning and evening Brown Bear tracking. Depending on the sightings in our base
    valley, we can drive to other adjacent valleys such as Umba La (based on snow levels at
    that time of the year) Pandrass, Matayen, Shimsha Kharbu, Suru or the apricot orchards
    in the beautiful village of Karkitchu.

  5. Day 06 Drive back to Sonamarg.

    Early morning post breakfast we will leave from lodge to Sonamarg. Dinner and
    overnight at the sonamarg hotel.

  6. Day 07 Final departure

    Post breakfast we will get a Srinagar airport drop.
