  1. Day 1 Copenhagen – Kangerlussuaq

There is departure with Air Greenland from Copenhagen to Kangerlussuaq and the adventure is now only 4 hours away. Upon arrival you are welcomed by a guide from our local partner, who helps you to check in at Hotel Kangerlussuaq. The hotel is located in the airport building, close to shopping facilities and with the great scenery just outside in the beautiful backyard.

Immediately after check in, the guide holds an information meeting where you’ll get an impression of the exciting area and excursion ideas for the rest of the afternoon. The former American base takes you on a quick trip back in history with the old barracks, the museum where time almost stands still and the wreckage from a T33A – fighter in Sandflugtsdalen (the Sand Drift Valley).

Ice Cap Point 660 (5 hours):

Kangerlussuaq is also the perfect place to go on a trip to the endless ice cap. At a distance you will get a glimpse of the impressive Russell glacier – a 30-80 m high wall of ice with a river in front. There is a fine chance to see musk oxen – they can however often be mistaken for a big rock.

The Ice Cap is only a few hours’ drive from Kangerlussuaq. As your flight approaches Greenland, you get a great view of the Ice Cap from above.

  2. Day 2 Kangerlussuaq – Ilulissat

Today, the trip continues to Ilulissat by flight. Upon arrival at Ilulissat, you will be picked up by Hotel Arctic’s bus and as you approach the hotel, you are able to enjoy the hotel’s location high above the town overlooking the famous Ice Fjord.

At the following information meeting, the guide from World of Greenland informs you about the area and the many excursions available either on your own or on guided trips at sea, on land or by air. Before sitting down for the welcome dinner at Hotel Arctic’s splendid restaurant, take some time to relax and dwell on the spectacular view of the Ice Fjord and the seemingly never-ending horizon.

Ilulissat – Jakobshavn – was founded in 1741 and, today, it is the third largest town in Greenland with more than 4,500 inhabitants. Ilulissat is a great mixture of modern life and traditional Greenlandic living. You can spend the rest of the day inhaling the fantastic atmosphere, the outstanding view and the incredibly fresh air. You can look forward to the cultural city walk:

Cultural Historic Guided Tour (2 hrs):

Some people might think: “we can just take a walk around the town on our own.” And yes, you probably could, but with the guided cultural historic tour you will get an enhanced understanding of the Greenlandic culture and history, which will give all your other experiences in Greenland a new perspective.

The guide will tell you about the history of the town, the Greenlandic culture and contemporary life 300 kms north of the Arctic Circle. We will visit the fishermen at the harbor and the hunters at their trading post “Brættet”. We will show you the church and famous explorer Knud Rasmussen’s place of birth.

  3. Day 3 Explore Ilulissat

You now have 2 days in Ilulissat. Ilulissat is a lovely and very Greenlandic town that holds both a modern atmosphere and a more traditional lifestyle. Hunting and fishing are paramount and fishing boats jostle for the space with industrial trawlers. Sled dogs and houses in almost all colours adorn the rocky landscape.

The beautiful Ice Fjord is both the local fishermen’s workplace and one of the biggest attractions in Ilulissat. It is the abundance of icebergs and the light, which constantly changes the colour of the ice that makes the Ice Fjord so special.

You can look forward to an unforgettable experience in the evening.

Evening/Midnight Sailing Among Icebergs (2½ hrs):

The evening sun makes the icebergs glow in a unique play of colours that people return to experience again and again.

Sailing during the night with the sun still shining is a fantastic and unusual experience. Almost every visitor to Ilulissat chooses to go on this boat trip among the icebergs at least once. Every day, more than 40 million ton of ice flow out into the fjord. The floating icebergs are gigantic, sometimes measuring more than 100 metres wide and long – and with a height of more than 100 metres above the water surface as well. These giants gather at the end of the fjord providing you with a great opportunity to sail among them.

The icebergs are a wonderful sight in every kind of weather; in the sunshine the contrasts are very clear. The blue shades are very beautiful, when it is cloudy and the midnight sun casts a unique glow on the icebergs during the night. Taking the boat trip on a bright night is definitely an extraordinary experience.

You should not miss out on this exceptional experience when visiting Ilulissat.

  4. Day 4 Explore Ilulissat

You join a hiking trip to the abandoned Sermermiut settlement:

Hiking Trip to the Abandoned Sermermiut Settlement (2 hrs):

Beautiful icebergs provide the setting for the old settlement of Sermermiut 1.5 kms south of Ilulissat. For 4000 years, different Inuit cultures lived in the settlement and, today, you can still see the relics, which indicate their presence. Hear the story about the life of the Inuit people and their traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See the ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands.

On this hike, we will pass “kællingekløften” where you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Ice Fjord, before heading back again. During the hike, there will be time to talk about flora, fauna, geology and not least the story behind the omnipresent ice.

Kayak Experience in Ilulissat (Optional) (approx. price EUR 170/-)

Inuit have kayaked in the Greenland waters for more than a thousand years and you can do it also. The kayak glides silently through the water and you see the huge icebergs rising around you. The midnight sun gives the ice a unique hue. In cloudy weather, the beautiful blue colors of the icebergs will be very clear. With a little luck, we also meet whales. All tours take place in stable double kayaks and a boat follows close by. The excursion takes about 3½-4 hours and we will be at sea for at least two of those hours. Minimum age 12 years. At least two hours on the water.

    • Transfer from World of Greenland to and from the kayaks
    • Safety instructions
    • Internationally approved kayak instructor
    • All kayaking equipment

  5. Day 5 By Boat to Eqi

Early in the morning we will travel north by boat to the fascinating Eqi glacier – one of Greenland’s unique natural wonders. After a good lunch in front of the Eqi glacier, the boat anchors at Glacier Lodge Eqi where you will be staying in cabins facing the glacier. The untamed nature is just outside the door and from the terrace you can take in the overwhelming silence, which is only broken by the crashing sound from ice calvings.

Only few places in Greenland are as beautiful as the Eqi Glacier, which ends in the fjord 80 kilometres north of Ilulissat. It is possible to get very close to the glacier by boat and experience huge pieces of ice breaking off. The sounds are thunderous, and the sight of ice crashing into the water is astonishing.

The 14 cabins offer comfortable luxury, a unique view and delicious meals in Café Victor, named after the famous Arctic explorer Paul-Emile Victor. The modern kitchen gets its power supply from solar panels, which is just one of many environmentally conscious initiatives at the hotel.

  6. Day 6 Explore Eqi

Today is at your own disposal. The area has an abundant wildlife and geology. Polar foxes, hares, grouses and sea eagles are often seen on land while seals swim near the camp. When you are on your own in the wild and desolate landscape you will undoubtedly get a sense of walking in the footsteps of famous Arctic explorers!

During your stay at Eqi it is possible to go for a short hike to the lagoon and glacier.

  7. Day 7 Glacier Lodge to Eqi

Another day of waking up to a fantastic view.

    Hike to the Eqi Glacier:

From the huts we hike around the small lagoon at the southern end of the glacier. There are often large flocks of geese in the lagoon in the breeding season. The trip goes further up the moraine where we can look down into the enormous cracks in the glacier few meters away from us. From here we will also get an overview of the glacier-front and we will see the impressive calvings from the glacier.

After lunch, the boat will take you back to Ilulissat where you will arrive in the early evening. Accommodation at Hotel Arctic again.

Enjoy the last morning at Eqi before the boat takes you back to Ilulissat.

This is the last day in Ilulissat. Today you will be going on a whale safari.

Whale Safari Among Icebergs (3½ hrs):

”Whale ahead”. Suddenly the sea is filled with tail fins and glistening bodies, which rise towards the sky. It makes you jump the first time one of these magnificent mammals tumbles forward, greeting you with a spout.
Many different species of whale can be seen along Greenland’s coasts. And it is unmistakable when a whale in the vicinity, as they make their presence known by coming up to the surface to breathe and consequently send spouts of water vapour into the air at a speed of several hundred kilometres per hour; quite an astounding sight!

You will enjoy a wonderful farewell dinner at Restaurant Ulo at Hotel Arctic.
